In The News!

Painting Found in Trash Could Fetch $1M
Original article by ULA ILNYTZKY.

My Quick Summary: A painting which was stolen in the 80s pops up 20yrs later. Stolen in 1987... and found by an unsuspecting person on her morning walk almost 20yrs later (she's had it for 4yrs). The painting titled, "Tres Personajes" is said to fetch somewhere near one million dollars. The abstract painting by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo was painted in the 1970s. The original owner will have the painting auctioned off by Sotheby's. The lady who found the painting will receive an award and percentage of the sale.

What I wouldn't do to be in Milan for the Old Masters Paintings: Auction... and actually be able to afford a painting or two... or three... one can always dream!

Of Interest: I would like to travel to Prague... Prague is home to beautiful glassware and amazing scenery. Two places I'd love to see in Prague....
The Dancing House by famed architects *Frank Gehry and Vlado Milunič ... I struggled to find a picture of The Dancing House at night because I fell in love with a photograph taken at night of the architecture (seen on p. 162 in Elle Decor's November 2007 issue No141). This other photo I found will do for now: http://www.bicycle-tours.cz/pics/tours/central-bohemia/Prague-Dancing-house.jpg Here is another link... http://www.pragueexperience.com/places.asp?PlaceID=651

If that gorgeous architecture doesn't convince you... Prague is the home of the Mucha Museum. Learn more about Alfons Mucha.
Or more about him here.

and... with that I'm sold... one ticket for Prague please!!!

*Frank Gehry has many awe inspiring buildings around the world. I discovered this amazing architect through a friend
Linditalinders who pointed out his architecture during one of our Los Angeles trips. (Walt Disney Concert Hall) Thanks Linditalinders!

Interactive

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a great interactive tool for young artists. The multimedia programs are tools for learning about artists and art related topics. They also include history, biographies, quizzes, games and more.

I wrote a lesson plan which included the use of
How Van Gogh Made His Mark. The interaction makes it an engaging experience for students. If you have access to computers Explore & Learn is a great interactive learning tool to implement into your lesson plans! The Metropolitan Museum of Art also has a great Timeline of Art History. Where was this when I needed a timeline??

Other Explore & Learn topics:
Cézanne's Astonishing Apples
Romare Bearden: Let's Walk The Block
China: Dawn of a Golden Age, 200–750 ADA Resource for Teachers and Students
Gilbert Stuart: Making Faces
The Tomb of Perneb
Childe Hassam, American Impressionist

This weeks filler is... All the Cats Join In from the Cartoon Make Mine Music (1940s)

Some things I have learned in the first month of student teaching:

  • Learn to pick your battles

  • Don't look at situations as battles

  • Positive re-enforcement works wonders with "uninterested" students

Issues:

  • How to address students who plainly refuse to do their work in class

  • What's the best way to discipline (address the student privately, a call home, detention?)
